Proton Detector: Charged Fusion Products Diagnostic

Please note that though Florida International Univeristy (FIU) is collaborating with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), this TWiki page is maintained by FIU collaborators and the page is hosted by FIU. Please see the CCFE Information section for the address of the Wiki page maintained and hosted by the CCFE.

Proton Detector (PD)

The Proton Detector’s (PD) data will yield pulse height spectra created by Protons and Tritons emitted from the plasma during Neutral Beam Injection. Validation of the subsequent PD fast ion emission plasma profile will involve MAST Neutron Camera data. Preliminary testing of PD electronics and data acquisition software occurred during neutral beam, toroidal field coil, poloidal field coil, and ELM coil testing in March 2013. Probe head manufacturing and software development will continue to prepare for a July 2013 installation in MAST.

Summer Data Collection

  • Diagnostic installation: July 1st - July 15th 2013
  • Data collection: July 16th - July 26th 2013
  • Parasitic data collection: July 27th - End of M9 Camp 2013

Electrical Design Review

  • Will plan for May 2013

Noise Testing

Data collection:

  • Onsite noise testing: March 2013
  • Remote noise testing: March - April 2013
Collaborators travelling to MAST:
  • Ramona Perez: March 11th - March 24th 2013

Instructions to run DAQ Program (if need be): Information for sending equipment back to FIU after remote testing: Radiation source: Electronics Schema
  • cable_block_diagram.pdf
  • All cable lengths used will be the same for the July data collection
  • MAST reciprocating probe cable lengths were simulated for noise testing
Drawings - Mechanical Design 2013
  • This reflects new length of 185mm and diameter smaller than 111mm
  • New design coming soon (changes to probe head orientation angles made during noise testing)

Prototype

Installation: January 2013

Comments:

  • Prototype type dimensions fit into RP access cube (reduction in probe head diameter requested for greater ease of installation)
  • Our prototype RP connector may have become distorted during the welding of the connector to the prototype shell (this issue was fixed at CCFE)
  • A dummy RP shaft end was created and sent to FIU to test the fit of the RP connector before bringing the diagnostic for the summer data collection
  • Vacuum vent hole had to be drilled in top of prototype to bake for RP installation (at CCFE)
